Rwanda's First Domestic Mobile Phone Factory

The first mobile phone to be manufactured in Rwanda has been shown off to the public by the company. The Alira handset will sell locally for RWF19,900 (US$37) before any deals from the local operators.

The handset is the first off the line from a joint venture set up last year between the Rwanda Information Technology Authority and the Chinese firm, Chinalink Digital and Technology.

The company says that it has two more model under development - but production is limited to a maximum of 700 units per day.

In a promotional statement, the company said "Rwanda's position as the region's Information and Communication hub has been vindicated by the first mobile phone manufacturing plant in the south of the Sahara."

The company expects to seek export markets shortly.
